I was not beating up on a black leader but merely noting the discrepancy between his view of American military adventures and those of his supposed Republican adulators. As for the pursuit by Republicans of a Southern strategy,what Mr. Newell is referring to is a shell game. The Republicans who sought Southern white votes paid very little for them. Richard Nixon talked about getting the government off our backs but then gave gave us affirmative action programs once elected. Southern whites, as opposed to Republican placeholders residing in the South, have received zilch for giving their votes to the GOP. It is they, and not blacks, who should have turned their backs on the Republican Party. Sent at: 2008 05 16
