Message: Entry: The Truth About the "Good War" Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_truth_about_the_good_war#25913 Post contents: Mr. Cundiff needs to learn how to read. When I wrote that there was a world of difference between what "we" did in Euorpe and in the Pacific, I meant there was a world of difference in what we Americans did. (I realize Mr. Cundiff thinks there is no such thing as an "American," so perhaps this is the source of his confusion.) By and large, US bombers in Europe flew during the day and targeted military targets, such as the famous raids on the ball bearing plants in Schweinfurt. We took heavy casualties flying by day and were actually targeting items of military significance, not civilians. Unfortunately, too often in the Pacific we emulated what the British had done in Europe, flying at night and dropping incendiaries over population centers not caring who we killed. The former type of strategic bombing is morally justified, the latter is not. Sent at: 2008 07 06
