Message: Entry: The Truth About the "Good War" Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_truth_about_the_good_war#25915 Post contents: Sid and Adriana are prone to the vapors. Unlike them, I actually have a copy of Buchanan's book, and there is nothing in there saying that was "swell, groovy, and cool." Nothing even close. In fact, like other fans of John Lukacs, they will face cognitive dissonance if they ever read Buchanan's book, which is critical of one Lukacs hero (Churchill) but is blazoned with a quote from another Lukacs hero, George Kennan. This is what Kennan wrote to Buchanan, and what you will find on the back of Buchanan's book: "you make a strong case, in my view, for the thesis that the British guaranty to Poland . . . was neither necessary nor wise. The British government could not improve anything by offering to the Poles a support they were quite unable to give. They would have done better to shut up, to rearm as speedily as possible, and to avoid further formal commitments of any sort, while awaiting the further turn of events." Sent at: 2008 07 24
