White Southerners have truly gotten nothing but betrayal from the GOP. When I was a child in South Carolina, there was a name for a Southern republican: "scalawag". Once Strom Thurmond and the other career politicians abandoned the democratic party for the republicans instead of going it alone in a new party, that term fell out of use. The republican party was the first truly sectional party to gain power and it was a collectivist, socialist party dedicated to mercantilist corruption, the use of government force for social change, and the unrestrained looting of the public purse. That party has never changed one iota, regardless of the changing rhetoric from its frontmen. Black Southerners despise the republicans for luring them into being the apparent beneficiaries of the rape of the South while the true beneficiaries ran away back home once the deal was struck to end the military occupation. Those former slaves were left to live with the white victims of the military occupation and to face their anger. Southerners have long memories for betrayal. I only wish that my fellow white Southerners had memories as long as those of my fellow Southerners descended from the freed slaves who were betrayed and abandoned by the radical republicans in the farce known as Reconstruction. That today's democrats are indistiguishable from the early radical republicans and today's neoconservatives is comical in a tragic way. The two parties have merged before our eyes and at every presidential election cycle we are treated to two candidates without a penny's worth of difference between them. It's tragic.
