Message: Entry: Racialism As Pseudo-'Science' Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/racialism_as_pseudo_science#26637 Post contents: First, the term "racialist" is not a one-way street, some meme held by diverse white Americans to denigrate diverse black Americans as Raimondo appears to believe. Anyone can be a racialist. It is a body of ideas and beliefs that relegate race itself to a high degree of saliency in evaluating members of demographic groups in which usually the racialist does not see himself or herself as a member. Raimondo misunderstands "racialist" as a "whites-only" mental defect, something like the Rev. Wright does. Second, the notion that "Race is Destiny" is most certainly not something that Paul Gottfried argued. It is remarkably unfair to link Gottfried with a philosophy "which is reductionist, arid, and almost comically one-dimensional." I am surprised to see Raimondo stoop to attributing such a position to Gottfried. Third, Raimondo started this whole mini-tsunami with a name-calling essay which did not escape everyone's eyes. His use of hostile and dehumanizing terms for lower-income, lesser-educated white Americans showed his own bias and reductionist tastes. The term for slurring those you don't like on these terms (education & income) is "classist." Sent at: 2008 10 07
