Some decades ago, when Americans still "tinkered" as children perhaps part of the idea was that they could grow up and make a living from manual skill jobs. Many of the kind of jobs which rely on manual skills have been outsourced to the Third World, which makes it unlikely that the childhood and adolescent hobbies will lead to making an actual living.
