Message: Entry: An Imaginary Edmund Burke Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/an_imaginary_edmund_burke#27340 Post contents: Excellent post! This is also a good implicit answer to Austin Bramwell's recent post, where he defined conservatism in terms of "empirical" legitimacy. Like the "Burkeanism = gradualism" definition you refute here, it empties the concept of nearly all its concrete substance. Re the particular issue of gay marriage, Burke also spoke on proposed changes to marriage laws. If I remember correctly, he opposed lowering the age at which one can marry without parental consent. His opposition was based on specific reasoning about the possible consequences, as is much of the opposition to gay "marriage" today. Sent at: 2008 08 29
