Message: Entry: An Imaginary Edmund Burke Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/an_imaginary_edmund_burke#27387 Post contents: @ C. Roach, What does it matter? So often it seems the columns and posts get sidetracked on labels. Yopu and I have gone back and forth on defintions of "conservative" vs. "Libetarian" vs. "facist" etc. I would define myself as a "pragmatist"--at least with respect to government and dealing with others. What works? What doesn't? I don't care what labels are put on people. It's like arguing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. "Affirmative Action" doesn't work. Let's junk it. The programs of the "Great Society" created a permanent underclass, which resents those who funded it. Junk it. The War on Drugs. Junk it. There may or may not be differences in IQ between the races. So what? How does/should that effect our dealings with one another.?d The US, and the world, have enough problems to deal with without arguing over whether some is "Pos--Burkean". I'd like to see a discussion on how the folks who have created this society can retake it. Not with labels or bitching, but concrete suggestions. Maybe that's just me and this is a site for Philosophers who want to "fiddle while Rome burns" I'm a guilty as the next guy, I suppose. Sent at: 2008 12 01
