That it might be Mexico, but speaking English? It was because it continued attached to the economic engine of the North that it can share into its world position and wealth. As for the tariffs, does anyone realize that the Northern States had to pay those same tariffs too? The difference is that instead of bitching they built up their industry and became much more rich and populous than the Southern states, while at the REvolution it had been the other way around.
