My father, a smoker for 40 years, died of lung cancer when I was 18. My mother still smokes, and her voice is about as low as mine (like most commenters here, I am male). My grandparents on both sides were tobacco farmers in Wisconsin. So I have both sympathy for smokers who are constantly discriminated against, and also the realization that yeah, smoking is like playing Russian roulette. Sure, you will die anyway, and sure lots of people who smoke won't die from it. But the same is true of Russian roulette, in which only one player in six is adversely affected. If you (the generic you) want to have some minor release every day at the risk of all of these health problems plus addiction (the pro-smoking advocates don't like that word) plus the chance that you won't live to see your children grow up, then your sense of worth is twisted.
