A good case can be made that the decisive military action in ending the war in the east was the Soviet invasion of Manchuria (Operation August Storm). The Soviets captured an area about the same size as Western Europe in just over a week and there are some who argue that it was this that persuaded the Japanese to surrender. If the war had not ended when it did, the Soviets planned to invade Hokkaido before the Americans could invade Kyushu. Also, the Soviet Union would have occupied all of Korea rather than just the northern part. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were about extending American influence rather than limiting American casualties. Sent at: 2008 08 30
