Message: Entry: Nicotine and Me Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/nicotine_and_me#28404 Post contents: Modern smoking habits, which are so frequently immoderate (i.e. gluttonous, and hence sinful) and addictive, have more to do with modern consumerism than with the traditional use of tobacco. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Cancer_smoking_lung_cancer_correlation_from_NIH.svg It seems that in "the good old days" before mechanized cigarette production, people actually did smoke a moderate amount, or used pipe tobacco or chewing tobacco moderately. It is in the 20th century, the age of mass marketing and advertising, that things got out of hand. I wouldn't be surprised if tobacco companies also spiked the amount of nicotine to produce addiction. So current smoking habits are not "traditional" or "conservative" but excessive. In the good old days, general smoking habits either were not as harmful as now. or else people generally did not live long enough to suffer the ill effects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobacco_smoking#Establishing_a_link_between_smoking_and_health_effects Sent at: 2008 11 20
