Kurth's notion of a "Protestant Deformation" is probably closer in spirit to what Lukacs and I deplore about American religion today. You are right that these pathologies of shallow emotion and anti-traditionalism don't exclusively apply to the Religious Right; I focused on the RR because it was most relevant to Lukacs' critique of populism in the US.
