Message: Entry: Mahony and Murdoch: When Roger Met Rupert Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/mahony_and_murdoch_when_roger_met_rupert#2927 Post contents: A small quibble. Charles notes that Murdoch has been a major supporter of the Australian Labour Party. The use of the British spelling of the word "labour" here is incorrect. The Australian Labor Party adopted the Americanised spelling as far back as 1912. The ALP adopted the American spelling at the initiative of the Kansas born Tasmanian politician, one of the pioneers of Australian federation, King O'Malley. O'Malley was largely responsible for the creation of the Australian capital city of Canberra, designed by American town planner Walter B. Griffin. Skeptics of the day called it "a good sheep farm ruined." So maybe Murdoch's American citizenship is boomerang karma for O'Malley's Canberra. Sent at: 2008 12 02
