Message: Entry: What Is Nationalism? Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/what_is_nationalism#29340 Post contents: These observations about nationalism are incisive. Nevertheless, they do not, and cannot go to establishing some moral equivalence between nationalism, considered as a phenomenon, and communism. Communism, as numerous Papal encyclicals pointed out at the time, is the more pernicious evil becuause of a secular messianic drive to transcend all regionalisms, in order to provide a single solution to the problems inherent in human existence in this world (poverty, inequity). To do so it must inevitably re-define man. Nationalism need not do this, as it is more narrowly the exxageration of a legitimate human good, the state. Sent at: 2009 01 08
