Down here in the states, we are captivated by the idea that public orthodoxies of our political society must be tempered and tested in the open square of <i>vigorous</i> debate. Good ideas last; weak ones don't. It's just that simple. Any regime that must rely on repression to sustain itself has relinguished all legitimacy to rule, and that's a rot more virulent than critique and dissent can avail. We should never assume the regime has all the answers, and when we do, we suffer as we are suffering now, under the thumb of an absentee President and his lawless administration. Sent at: 2008 12 01
