Message: Entry: Gipper Anxiety -- The Struggle Over What Would Reagan Do Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/gipper_anxiety_the_struggle_over_what_would_reagan_do#31202 Post contents: I'm not quite sure that the ideological and rhetorical differences between Reagan and the current neocons are as stark as this article suggests. Many of the neocons got their start working for the figure who spoke about America as "the shining city" and who would cite the distinctly Jacobin phrases of Tom Paine. Moreover, the paleos in the 1980s made all the same criticisms of Reagan and his administration that they now direct against Bush and his advisors-- and for perfectly consistent reasons. The real difference may be not between Reagan and his neocon perfecters but rather between Reagan and many of the early neocons, some of whom did sound sensible on foreign policy. Sent at: 2008 12 02
