Message: Entry: Gipper Anxiety -- The Struggle Over What Would Reagan Do Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/gipper_anxiety_the_struggle_over_what_would_reagan_do#31248 Post contents: Both Nikolas and Paul make valid points about understanding Reagan's legacy with relation to the neocons. Since Reagan was an ex-New Deal Democrat who worshipped FDR, it's not hard to portray his presidency as the beginning of neoconservatism, albeit one which was perhaps more moderate than the current version. (In the early 90s, Irving Kristol himself thought that the US should pull back from hegemonic ambitions.) Whether Reagan would have imbibed the global democratist hubris that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall and eventually provoked the Iraq War is probably unanswerable. Sent at: 2008 12 02
