Possibly relevant to Machiavelli: There seems to be an implied strategy at Takimag which is, in <i>effect</i>, "Engage in political action if and only if there is no chance of success in the short run." I'm recommending exactly the opposite strategy. (There's also the Chronicles strategy, which I agree with Takimag in rejecting, and which is, "Refrain from all political activity.
