Message: Entry: Fantasy Island Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/fantasy_island#33604 Post contents: Agapite mou captain,Its always a pleasant jorney throgh your words on the BUSHIDOS annual summer odyssey cruise. However I must take issue with your reference to the REBETIKA(greek blues).Other great composers cant compare with MOZART let alone the greek rebetes of the 20s and 30s.Anyway it was not the quality of the rebetiko music which made it very popular with the LAOS but the scene that came along with it.The rebetiko music scene was spawned after the asia minor catastrophe(thus the influence of eastern sounds). There were many people who where down and out during this period and did not have the luxury of listening t o mozart at the platia on sunday night.SO what does one do in the absence of high culture?Come sunday nite one wold take a stroll tothe local SKILADIKO(dog bar-boite)for a evening of DRINKING DRUGGING GAMBLING WHORING and listen to someone else sing about your pain.(misery loves company). The rebitika were also very popular with the swells.Captain Im sure one of your BARPAS(panama hat etc)put on his dark blues for a nite of scumming and slumming DOING you know what with a local rebetisa(crack whore).ΖΗΤΟ Ο ΛΟΥΛΑΣ.
