Message: Entry: Homo Americanus Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/homo_americanus#3500 Post contents: As I've said before, conservatives must realize that the American war in the middle east is an attempt to impose modernism on a traditional, religious culture which just wants to live according the way its traditions and religion have always guided it to live. Why should we support that? It's been terribly disillusioning to listen to the mainstream conservative spokesmen - I thought they were conservative, anyway - talk about how we need to break a traditional, religious culture with the poison of modernity so that we may put our boot on its neck. And that *is* what they're saying, no doubt. Have you listened to Sean Hannity lately? Speaking about what should be done to change the middle east, he sounds like a cross between Robespierre and Betty Friedan. American conservatism is not conservatism. It is what 100 years ago would have been considered liberalism, combined with manic drive for empire, cultural and otherwise. I think it was Bill Lind who observed that in 1913, America represented the face of the international left. By 1919 it represented the face of the international right. And it was not really America that had changed, but the world (Europe, really) that had shifted around America - so much had that cataclysmic war blasted the world off its foundations. Just so. But let us not ever forget that America is only rightist subjectively compared with the ruins of Europe - it is and never has been anything but leftist objectively Sent at: 2008 09 06
