He argues that secularized Protestantism has contributed to both the missionary moralizing and phony individualism which he identifies with homo americanus. That is a different view from the clearly untrue one that he never states, that (Western) Europeans are less secular than Americans. If I'm not mistaken, Southern whites voted overwhwelmingly for such global democratic enthusiasts as Woodrow Wilson and Dubya. The attempt to blame neoconservative dogmas entirely on Yankees simply won't wash. Southerners have never hesitated to support wars aimed at spreading democracy. Sent at: 2008 10 13
