Didn't the US Ambassador to Iraq give Saddam the "green light" to invade Kuwait? We used the invasion as an excuse to put military bases in Saudi Arabia. After the first Gulf War we kept Saddam confined with economic sanctions and no-fly zones. Then Osama bin Laden issued his fatwa demanding US military bases be removed from sacred Saudi soil. He attacked US embassies in Africa, the WTC in 1993 and the USS Cole in Yemen. After 9-11 it seems the US decided to remove the military bases from Saudi Arabia and relocate them to .... Iraq. Of course, the excuse to invade Iraq was WMD. But Saddam's son-in-law, the general in charge of WMD, had defected to the West with documents proving the WMD had been destroyed. Apparently so.
