Message: Entry: Homo Americanus Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/homo_americanus#3556 Post contents: I thank Rin for his clarification of Sunic's views and for offering John Lukac's very necessary distinction between nationalism and patriotism. We should also remember is distinction between Fascists and Nazis, and between both and Conservatism. Maurras and Drumond were not Fascists; they were extremist conservatives. And "radical", "ultra" and "extremist" are bad adjectives to have attached to ANY political movement. And I accept Paul Gottfried's offer to form a coalition between Southerners no longer fooled by scaliwags and "country slickers" and New Englanders who have come to their senses about the darker parts of their heritage. Among such New Englanders I count my heroes Hawthorne, Melville, and Henry Adams; also in count Bernard Berenson, George Santayana, even Percival Lowell, and by proximity the Brothers James. Sign me up for the coalition, Dr. Gottfried! By the way, with respect to George Santayana, someone -- I can't remember who -- has quipped: "No one reads old George anymore; everybody's to busy quoting him." Sent at: 2008 12 01
