Europe had much more diversity of culture in pre-Westphalian times than in the modern era. American nationalism is aggressive and soul-destroying and has universalist pretensions. It is democratic liberalism unleashed. But the answer to this process is not to idolize some other nation, but to stop idolizing nations at all and to have a realistic view of one's own.
