More often than not, over the last two hundred years U.S. Marines have served in all kinds of missions that had little if anything to do with defending America: from Shanghai to Belleau Wood, to Haiti, etc. Bill Kristol didn't send the Marines to any of those places. BTW, the Bush administration is the only one I can think of where everyone knows the name of the number 3 guy in Defense. You have Christians at President, VP, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, National Security Advisor, etc., but the number two and number three guys in the Pentagon happen to be Jews and they have primary responsibility for launching invasions.
