The true version (I was a kid in Leopoldville at the time and know this from the many times it was told and re-told) is that the German liked to water-ski. When warned about crocs in the Congo River he scoffed, went out anyhow, took a tumble into the water at some point, and was never seen again. For most of us it was adventure enough to take the ferry to Brazzaville... which I've survived twice. Sent at: 2008 07 08
