You really should get out of New York. There is another America that is descended from folk who came over before 1715 and they are still the majority. The population of the US was about 30 million at the outbreak of the Civil War. At that time it was doubling by natural increase about every 25 years. Make that 35, for argument's sake. That would place the nativists at 120 million in 1930 at which time the birth rate dropped. Even with reduced natural increase that number should approach 200 million, that is, 2/3 of today's numbers, by 2007. Hollywood's picture of a melting pot is untrue. This country is still for those the Founding Fathers termed, "Ourselves and our posterity." Today they are not politically cohesive, but if issues arouse them, they will dominate. For too long the tawdry ethnic politics of places like NYC have been allowed into reach into the national government for their parochial interests to the detriment of the national good.
