Lincoln's election precipitated secession. Had Lincoln accepted secession, the result would have been a lot of local secessions first in the South, which once it did not have the threat of te Northern invasion, people would have no incentive to hang togethr. In the North, states that felt themselves slighted, say Rhode Island, would want to secede too, once they learned it was possible. So the whole thing would probably have ended on a bunck of Balkan Republics. And with a Mexico which was not fractured, and with Canada up Norht (who knows, Maine might have decided to get back to the British Crown) before you know it, there would have been no U.S. Think of Italy in the Renaissance. All that talent and wealth squandered in wars between different cities, and in the end swallowed up by the Spanish Empire. So, yes, because Lincoln did what he did, people in the South are not now speaking Spanish, and people in the North are not swearing allegiance to the Queen. You must determine if that is a good outcome or not.. Sent at: 2008 09 06
