Message: Entry: Sept. 11, 2001: Adrift Among the Dead Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/sept_11_2001_adrift_among_the_dead#5021 Post contents: Indeed, I do not put my trust in institutions per se, their being no better than the people who staff them. For an example you could see how the monastic movement that was supposedly based on Poverty lead to the accumulation of riches by abbeys and monasteries, and how the Franciscans themselves fell prey to it. But there is an amount of reliability to be expected in a system, and people prefer to deal with reliable institutions, or at least more reliable ones (This here is a legitimate function of the Free Market). And one entity in which its members can opt out when they do not like it inherently less reliable than one in which they do not. Sent at: 2008 10 07
