Well this essay obviously INVITES extraordinary and weird speculations, so, ah, what the hell, I'll say it reminds me of one of my favourite episodes of the "X-Files." (Yeah, I have a crush on Gillian Anderson, anyone have a problem with that? ;-) I don't like much American TV, but sometimes the X-Files were brilliant. (Around 20 percent of the time, whenever they avoided the stupid American obsession with extraterrestrials.) And in their final season, there was one CHARMING episode titled, "Improbable" in which Burt Reynolds played the (unspecified but implied) role of "God". The first time I saw it, I recoiled, because I'm antipathetic to the Modern Age superstition of mathematical determinism - but then when I watched it a second time, I realised that this episode implied a REFUTATION of determinism! And Burt Reynolds proved himself to be a true Thespian here, not to mention the Divine Gillian Anderson. Anyway, here's a clip from that episode, in which Burt Reynolds is playing the (undefined) role of "God", who gives us everything we need to play - and preferably, to have fun (and having fun is really hard work after all) - watching us with enough detachment to keep us free, but always hoping that we'll enjoy the game, and most of all, wanting us to understand that His (God's) gift to us IS precisely Freedom! Here you go. This is fun! Enjoy: http://youtube.com/watch?v=MrDQANTYe88 Sent at: 2008 11 22
