I believe that a terrorist attack on US soil or in the gulf, false flag or otherwise, would provide a perfect opportunity to scapegoat Iran. Regarding the economic fallout (so to speak) of a retaliatory action on Iran by the US: The global derivative meltdown currently in the early stages of development could possibly be coordinated with a "terror" event, effectively transferring the blame from the financial elites to Iran.
