Conversely, I would like to see more Jews emulate Rabbit Lapin and Rabbi Neusner, in overcoming a reflexive hostility to nation, social conservatism, and public Christianity. Expressions of the latter attitude are NEVER punished in the public square, and are indeed lavishly rewarded. The resulting resentment, far more than any genuine racial hatred, probably accounts for most of the anti-Semitic outbursts on the Right. Nevertheless, they are childish and counterproductive. Indeed, people like Abe Foxman may be intentionally trying to provoke such outbursts, the better to discredit their mostly sober and fair-minded critics. Sent at: 2008 07 24
