Wouldn't it be much simpler to return the stolen loot once and for all to the Church? Until that stolen loot is returned, the State must fill in the place of the Church. As for the tithe, it was the minimum contribution, if I recall my History. There was ostentatious display, as well as the desire for absolution of sins in giving wealth to the Chruch well above and beyond the tithe (Does anyone recall Black Adder trying to convince the old sinner in his deathbed not to give his property to the Church, because if he does, the King will have him killed?) The State migtht well manage with a 10% tax if rich people starting getting generous to it as they were to the Church. But of course, the State does not grant remission of sins... Sent at: 2008 11 22
