I had a Japanese student tell me (when he was drunk) that when he was in university he loved a man, but he (the student telling me the story) was (the) "woman". I couldn't understand what he meant for a minute then I fished it out of him that he meant that he "took it", rather than "gave it". And to him it wasn't unusual or shameful. Actually, there is a lot of homosexuality in Japanese history and the samurai class. But most Japanese think that it doesn't really exist here in Japan like in the West.
