Message: Entry: William Hawkins, Loser Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/william_hawkins_loser#5964 Post contents: The problem with "modern nationalism" is largely its 19th-century manifestation. It demanded allegiance to abstract ideas of the state at the expense of tradition, kith and kin, and regional loyalties. There is an older sense of nationalism, however, with which a paleo like myself would be comfortable, and it is one based in a particular group of people living in a particular place. Traditional nationalism, as the Latin root 'nascere' suggests, implies link by blood. Sent at: 2008 07 24
