Message: Entry: The Neocons and Charles Maurras Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/leo_strauss_the_neocons_and_charles_maurras#6520 Post contents: The "United States", as originally conceived, were a union of states. As such, it was not a tribal nation, the state was one's tribe. A man was a Virginian, or a New Yorker, never a United Statesian. Back in the day, that was how a citizen experienced his identity. Speaking of changes in the language, at what point did the proper noun "United States" become singular when it used to be plural? Sent at: 2008 05 16
