Message: Entry: Green Means Go Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/green_means_go#6897 Post contents: It took me a few minutes to figure out why this bugs me. It's not the public acknowledgment of a Muslim holiday that's so disturbing, although it might be more appropriate to black out the entire Empire State Building for Walpurgisnight in recognition of the Satanic activities that go on there. But then that's a clue to what's so stupid and inappropriate about this: isn't it a kind of profanity to use a commercial building as a religious symbol? It reminds me of the public outcry over the legend "In God We Trust" when it was first used on US coinage in 1864. Most Americans don't know it's not a "fine old tradition"; it was first used on the Two-Cent-Piece in 1864, and at the time many Christians objected to profaning the name of God by putting it on money. Eisenhower was the one who advocated putting it on ALL American coins and currency, as a meaningless symbol of America's so-called "religiosity" in contrast to atheist Communism - but isn't confusing God with economics exactly what the Marxists do? I can imagine thoughtful Muslims actually being pissed off by this. Sent at: 2008 07 24
