A few thoughts. There is no question the soviet juggernaut produced olympic champions and brilliant chess champions, despite a very stifling regime. But lets give a little credit to American culture. I've heard people disparage it. Take jazz and baseball both uniquely American. The Japanese are fanatical about both. The french wear jeans and honor jerry lewis (go figure.)
