Message: Entry: Let's Sit Out World War IV Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/lets_sit_out_world_war_iv#8772 Post contents: Digbydolben’s point above (scroll to first comment) about energy renders much of this article moot. As the world’s oil reserves are rapidly depleted, the remaining supplies will be allocated arbitrarily, not through free-market mechanisms, leading to shortages, hoarding, turmoil, and violence. We’re witnessing the early stages of the turmoil and violence now in Iraq. The U.S. is building “permanent” military bases in Iraq to last 30 years, and completing the world’s largest embassy (104 acres/nearly $1 billion) in a destitute country of 25 million people. I recall reading recently that Iraq’s oil reserves are valued at something like $30 trillion (maybe someone can correct me on that). I’m sure Cardinal Dickelieu (aka Dick Cheney) and his band of rapacious neocons feel that 30 trillion isn’t a bad return on a $1-2 trillion investment. With that kind of payoff, you can afford a few mishaps along the way. And there we are, the Great Allocator, plunked right down in the middle (Saudi Arabia on one side, Iran on the other) of the world’s greatest remaining pool of liquid gold. The great game is afoot. Digby’s other comments about our subjection to the “Zionist Apartheid State,” etc. are also relevant to our predicament. Sent at: 2008 10 07
