Message: Entry: Mopping up the Israel Lobby Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/mopping_up_the_israel_lobby#9280 Post contents: Sid, Anyone with a knowledge of Catholic theology would know that "infallibility" can and does exist in more than just the formal, self-conscious invocation by the pontiff ex cathedra (from the papal throne). Once again, you speak about something that you do not know. Doctrines may also be infallible if they: (1) reaffirm the constant and consistent teaching of the Church, (2) on matters of faith and morals, (3) are addressed to the all the faithful, (4) demonstrate the will to bind, and (5)invoke with solemnity the authority of the Church. One learns this in Fundamental Theology. Thus, even though the proclamation of the Assumption of the BVM and the dogma of the Immaculate Conception were self-consciously proclaimed via the charism of papal infallibility ex cathedra, there are other doctrinal teachings of the Church which would certainly qualify. Thus, Fr. Lucien Choupin in his authoritative VALEURS DES DECISIONS DOCTRINALES ET DISCIPLINAIRES DU SAINTE SIEGE (Paris: Beauchesne, 1913), the DICTIONNAIRE DE THEOLOGIE CATHOLIQUE, and numerous others (e.g. Fernand Mourret, R. Aubert, Reginald Garrigo- Lagrange, Cardinal Journet), not to mention various pontiffs (e.g St. Pius X), have carefully explained this. Thus, as I explained in a long-passed thread, the encyclical Quanta cura of the Blessed Pius IX, is considered, because it satifies in full each of the conditions above listed, to convey infallible Catholic teaching on religious liberty. Fernand Mourret, surveying the teaching of fourteen pontiffs and dozens of theologians, states as follows: "The encyclical Quanta cura, which, being addressed to the Catholic world to condemn errors, has the characteristics of an ex cathedra act." [Histoire Generale de l'Eglise, vol. VIII, p. 501] Your view is constricted, and untenable in Catholic theology. Finally, even if some constant teachings of the Church are not, per se, "infallible," they are, if constantly taught by the Magisterium, considered "indefectible," and demanding of the same internal assent that an infallible teaching demsands. Again, Fundamental Theology 101. Secondly, I really don't give a fig what some "International Catholic- Jewish Liaison Committee" says about "deicide." I could call a meeting of a few priests and bishops, and declare the world flat, too, but that wouldn't make it so. The fact is, Sid---and it is FACT, just go and read any of the sources I listed or any of the resulting commentary after the council---the council removed the condemnation of deicide from the final schema. WE need to end this diversion, Sid; we shall only go round and round, and bore everyone else. Sent at: 2008 05 15
