Message: Entry: Frum's Mishagas Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/frums_mishagas#9390 Post contents: As one of the last surviving members of the old Canadian Right (who recognizes that John A. MacDonald was not a neocon), I agree with my friend Paul Gottfried's critique of those who fail to grasp the basic facts of WW One, especially the shared responsibility of all powers for that tragic blunder. I suppose, however, that Frum (who laments the lack of awareness which Canadians have for their ancestor's sacrifices in wars past) would have been on stronger ground had he focused on WW 2, which more easily passes the criteria of just war theory. The Trudeau legacy of understating and even ignoring the contribution of the Canadian military to my nation's history has persuaded many Canadians that their nation was founded by pacifist and multiculturalist ideologues. This legacy no doubt explains why the federal government gave only $250,000 as start-up funds to the Juno Beach memorial in 2002 (Juno is the Canadian equivalent of Omaha), which forced aging veterans to go cap in hand to big business to build a monument worthy of the sacrifices of our WW2 soldiers in the D-Day campaign. (Even Wal-Mart gave more money than the government!) Canadians often ridicule Americans for their lack of knowledge of Canada; I can only respond that self-righteous hypocrisy has won out over historic memory in much of Canada today.
