Anybody But McCain!
This is very good news: Huckabee + Paul gets 20% in North Carolina; Huckabee + Paul + Romney gets 23% in Indiana. If you add in the “no preference” vote in NC, then the anti-McCain vote jumps up to 27%. Some of this might be a flailing protest vote--which isn’t a bad start in my opinion!--but then clearly there’s somewhere between 5-12% of Republican voters in states around the country who are firmly “Ron Paul Republicans.” Hucakbee, too, should be given his due for becoming the candidate for a lot of evangelicals. All of this makes Paul’s utterly dispiriting “winding down” youtube message seem even more strategically retarded. It’s great that Paul’s still on the ballot, but the fact is, the MSM is ignoring entirely the GOP “race,” if it is one. Thus the general pissed-off-ness of middle American conservatives lacks an outlet for expression--particularly after the leaders of the short-lived Talk Radio Rebellion have backed down (as we always knew they would). A Ron Paul third party that would generate even 5% in the general would make a statement; maybe the movement it generated would quickly burn out, much as the organizations birthed by the Reform Party runs of Perot and Buchanan are now small and diffuse, but it would still make people take notice. “Anybody but McCain--conservatives for Obama” is beginning to seem more and more attractive…

I have spoke of this elsewhere, but it is worth repeating.
For those of you who continue to believe it is a good idea to vote for Obama because of his foreign policy orientation, I urge you to consider that securing the border is the issue of our time. What happens in Iraq or even Iran pales in comparison to the irreversible destruction we face as a nation if we do not stop the tide of third-world immigration into our country. Iraq is nothing, the border is everything. Vote for the president who will do the most to secure our borders, even if it’s not much. In recognition of the mortal threat presented to the United States by illegal immigration, I have settled for the president who “probably” wants to secure the border first before dealing out amnesty. In stark contrast to McCain, Hillary and Obama have openly declared their antipathy for border security and even support such ludicrous ideas as giving driver’s licenses to illegal aliens.
Also, for those of you who believe we need a liberal in office to galvanize the populous base, I would argue against this idea because the “moderate” McCain will accomplish this when he tries once again to institute his amnesty plan of “comprehensive immigration reform.”

Or Ron Paul supporters could vote for Chuck Baldwin, the Constitution Party nominee.

John McCain is an open-borders traitor, willing to slit the throats of conservatives
on the issue. I expect Barack Obama to be incompetent as president, much like Jimmy
Carter, and not be able to get anything done, including amnesty. Even if John McCain
squeezes out a victory in November, Barack Obama will defeat McCain or any other
Republican in 2012 and be in a much more advantageous position in 2012 than he would be in
2008. Reluctantly, Obama should be the choice of conservatives in 2008. McCain’s
political destruction is too important.

About spreading democracy beyond our borders, the historical precedent is not
Abraham Lincoln (which could be said that he kept the spreading within our borders,
depending on whethere you consider the Confederacy to be within it
or outside), but instead James Madison.
It was James Madison who had the bring idea to conquer Canada and
free the Canadians from the King’s yoke so that they could enjoy
Democracy.
He ended up having the White House torched, and he, more than Lincoln
deserves to be called the true father of the Wilson doctrine.
You can check how the Canadians celebrate the war.

As a Canadian, I appreciate your point about Madison, Adriana. Fortunately for Canada, the American army was ill-prepared for invasion in 1812. It would have been a different story if the huge victorious Yankee army had invaded Canada (as most of Lincoln’s cabinet desired) back in 1861. The Stars & Stripes would be flapping in the breeze from Victoria to Charlottetown today!
Speaking of Obama/McCain: if Americans (at least on takimag) are agonizing over this choice, it’s troubling that more foreigners are not. Most Canadians and Europeans seem to be hoping for an Obama victory with great enthusiasm, thus showing their ignorance of the fact that Democrats created the warfare/welfare state which led to the Iraq war. Obama may be better than McCain, but is the enthusiasm really justified?
