Obama: Stuff Non-White People Like?

Posted by Richard Spencer on May 12, 2008

Of the amazing, wonderful things that Obama would do if elected, I think we can safely chalk up “making Muslims love us” in the “ain’t gonna happen” ledger.

Edward Luttwak talks some sense in the Times:

One danger of such charisma, however, is that it can evoke unrealistic hopes of what a candidate could actually accomplish in office regardless of his own personal abilities. Case in point is the oft-made claim that an Obama presidency would be welcomed by the Muslim world.

This idea often goes hand in hand with the altogether more plausible argument that Mr. Obama’s election would raise America’s esteem in Africa — indeed, he already arouses much enthusiasm in his father’s native Kenya and to a degree elsewhere on the continent.
But it is a mistake to conflate his African identity with his Muslim heritage. Senator Obama is half African by birth and Africans can understandably identify with him. In Islam, however, there is no such thing as a half-Muslim. Like all monotheistic religions, Islam is an exclusive faith.

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.

This is certainly true, but I think that Luttwak might be giving a bit too much credit to the Obamaniacs (not the undeceived Obamacons, like myself). They don’t so much confuse the potential reactions of East Africans with Muslims to an Obama presidency as conflate most all Third World people into one big happy “they’re not white or Asian” soup.

Take for instance, Andrew Sullivan’s definitive articulation of the “Obama will make them love us” fantasy.

Consider this hypothetical. It’s November 2008. A young Pakistani Muslim is watching television and sees that this man—Barack Hussein Obama—is the new face of America. In one simple image, America’s soft power has been ratcheted up not a notch, but a logarithm. A brown-skinned man whose father was an African, who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, who attended a majority-Muslim school as a boy, is now the alleged enemy. If you wanted the crudest but most effective weapon against the demonization of America that fuels Islamist ideology, Obama’s face gets close. It proves them wrong about what America is in ways no words can.

Of course, if one mentions Obama’s middle name or his attending a Manassas as a child in other contexts, then it’s “coded” racist talk, but when you’re speaking of how Obama can magically “reach out,” then it’s A-okay.

I’d be curious to learn exactly what a Pakistani young person thinks of someone like Obama. Being that our hypothetical Haazig’s idea of a black American is probably some composite image of Colin Powell, Flavor Flav, Tiger Woods, Terrell Owens, and Barrack Obama that’s been piped into Waziristan through the Internet and Satellite TV, I’d imagine he’d probably look upon a President Obama with a combination of curiosity, fear, fascination, and disgust. I’m not sure though. I am positive, however, that Barrack’s brown skin and his salad days in a Manassas won’t help us in slightest to win over the Muslims. I think there’s something about invasions and military bases in their holy lands that kind of overrides that pan-Third World solidarity thing.

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood.

Every single person born into this world is considered by Mullahs to have been born a Muslim

Spencer: In the traditional Muslim view, everyone is born a Muslim. Said Muhammad: “The mother of every person gives him birth according to his true nature. It is subsequently his parents who make him a Jew or a Christian or a Magian” (Sahih Muslim, Book 033, Number 6429).

You recall that the German-American President, David Dwight Eisenhower, whose claim to fame was the defeat and destruction of Germany in WWII.

I’d be curious to learn exactly what a Pakistani young person thinks of someone like Obama. -Spencer

Why? They cant vote here. What do Iranians think of McCain? I dont give a rats patootie, personally, what Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Panama or others think.

Oh, it is clear what Richard is saying: “Manassas” is a famous town in northern Virginia
where our valiant Confederate heroes defeated the invading damnyankees (one word, please!)
in 1861 and 1862. So the only question is: what side would Obama have favoured, and the
answer is clear, the damnyankee side. Meaning: He won’t win a state south of the Potomac come
this November. The so-called “youth vote” (which favors him now), will, as usual, retreat
back to smaller proportions this fall, and older Southern whites will kill him at the polls.

What you forget about Obama is that he’s not black, but beige. He was raised traditional, white and Midwestern...he’s had one foot in Nixon/Reagan’s “Middle America” all his life. He is the black politician that whites don’t seem to be afraid of, unlike Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. It is undeniable that he knows how to talk the soothing talk that working
class white Americans like to hear.

“Conservatives” and Republicans have been relying on the resentments of white working class folks to the McGovern era “identity politics” for 40 plus years. Now Obama comes along and busts
that up.

Certain elements within the Democrat Party along with the old “Blue Dogs” have recognized this for along time...most prominent among them is Rudy Taxeria, whose book, “America’s Forgotten Majority” outlined the problem the Democrats have had since 1968---getting votes of white working class Americans.

The “Conservatives” have been defending “laissez faire"--which really only applies to government policy that benefits Middle America---for years, yakking like social populists, but governing like Wall Street plutocrats.

Now we have a Democrat candidate in Obama that talks the soothing talk that appeals to Middle America, while most likely he’ll govern like a McGovern Democrat.

Yes, many in the Democrat Party know it can’t win elections with only “people of color”, poor destitute immigrants, unmarried women with children, government workers, college professors, Hollywood
Tycoons and well-to-do urban sophisticates.  But the Republicans/"Conservatives" can’t win elections with only Wall Street bankers, CEO’s, real estate speculators, and well-to-do suburbanites either.

Both need the white working classes to win. Ironically, McCain has nothing to offer them, and
Obama at least talks their talk. Don’t’ write off Obama, he can win.

Joe Populist

“It is undeniable that he knows how to talk the soothing talk that working
class white Americans like to hear.”

Is this not the same man who said, “And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

No Sir, I don’t think he is speaking a language that working class white Americans want to hear. Instead, his appeal is to 90% of black voters, an out-of-touch elite and the ignorant youth.

“You Americans think you have a Negro problem; your problem is that there are no Negros in America, only browy Anglo-Saxon Protestants.” —Erik, Ritter von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, Richmond, Indiana, 1967(?).  Only in America… would Obama count as black, I mean Black.  As for the religious issue, I don’t think many Muslims think him worthy of death as an apostate.  I do think that most of them would be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in relation to Israel, as I am myself.  And many if not most Jews do not trust him to put Israel first.  Yeah, it would be better if he were an orthodox Christian, if not an Orthodox Christian, but he may come closer in some ways than his opposition.  Except for Ron Paul.

Brown, he said, not browy.

Luttwakk made several errors in his column - Evidently he read Pipes and wrote accordingly. But just because some neocon says Obama is Muslim, doesn’t make it so. Further, rather than speculate what Muslim law suggests (Luttwakk does not know), he should know that baptism obviates all of that. He seems ignorant of this. Btw, Obama never attended a madrassa and he never made any so-called “oft” made claims that Luttwakk suggests.

Luttwakks lurid fantasy of violence is more about what he wants to project onto others than anything else.

Mike Gavin sed: “Is this not the same man who said...I don’t think he is speaking a language that working class white Americans want to hear.”

Oh pooh. While Obama’s off the cuff remarks to a San Francisco liberal audience perhaps reveal hi sHarvard Ivy Tower white liberal attitudes, they were hardly representative of his average stump speeches.
You’ve not listened to many of Obama’s speeches obviously. Try C-Span.

Let’s compare Obama to McCain, a tottering fool who goes to places like YOungstown, Ohio full of displaced steele workers telling them the glorious benefits of globalization. Or going to Detroit, and telling them the auto industry jobs are not coming back. And generally, his put downs of anyone who disagrees with his support of unrestrained immigration.

The Republican Party/Conservatives have sucessfully talked the social populist talk for years.
And then governed like plutocrats. Don’t you think that the Democrats can play the same disingenous game?

Luttwak’s and others’ arguments that Barack Obama is an apostate from Islam rest on a questionable premise. It has become a commonplace that Obama’s father was a Muslim. Although his father was indeed born a Muslim, as an adult he became an atheist or agnostic, completely abandoned Islamic practices, and never identified as a Muslim. It is arguable that Barack Hussein Obama, Sr.’s infidelity constituted apostasy on his part. According to his memoir “Dreams from my Father,” people have often asked Obama, Jr. if he was a Muslim--his reply was always that he wasn’t, but that his grandfather, was, not his father.

Even if it could be argued that Obama’s father was still a Muslim, it does not follow that Obama the candidate would be in jeopardy under Sharia. According to Robert Spencer, “an apostate male is not to be put to death if he has not reached puberty” (Google “Barack Obama and Islamic Apostasy"). For a fairly detailed discussion about why Luttwak’s argument that orthodox Muslims would want to
execute Barack Obama, see Ali Eteraz, “Obama Islam Smear Changes Stripes.”
