All of this from a guy who doesn’t look like he could withstand much pain at all. But he’s made it his mission to spread pain across the globe. He’s extremely generous with other people’s lives.

As is to be expected, back in 1970 Bolton supported the Vietnam War. But he avoided fighting in Vietnam and enlisted in the National Guard to make sure he wouldn’t “die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy.”

Bolton was one among many who tried to assure Americans that the Iraq War would “pay for itself.” Instead, the USA’s military’s interventions since 2001 have saddled taxpayers to the tune of about $4.5 trillion and counting.

In 2000 Bolton described himself as a “convinced Americanist,” a position he favored over “globalism.” He once told National Review that “Individual liberty is the whole purpose of political life.”

What the hell does “individual liberty” have to do with bombing the rest of the globe? And how is my “individual liberty” involved when I don’t want these wars yet I’m forced to pay for them?

The New York Times, as is their wont, gets Trump’s appointment of Bolton entirely wrong. They said it’s a sign that “Trump is indulging his worst nationalist instincts.”

No, this is a hard pivot from nationalism to internationalism. From protectionism to interventionism. And it’s a sign that Trump is abandoning his best instincts. As I see it, none of America’s major problems are international; they are all domestic. Once again, it seems as if America’s politicians are willing to let the country rot in order to go “save the world.”
