A plea for economic literacy among journalists

Just saw this article from USAToday, linked to by Drudge:

?Federal, state and local governments are hiring new workers at the fastest pace in six years, helping offset job losses in the private sector.?

The author, Dennis Cauchon, even quotes an economist:

??Government jobs are an important cushion for the economy when the private sector falters,? says North Carolina State University economist Michael Walden.?

uhh, and where exactly does the government get that money to pay the unemployed??and what might it have been used for if not allocated for ?cushioning”?
