We heard all the usual stuff—“no end in sight,” “white flag of surrender,” “you didn’t support the surge!” “John McCain thought it’d be a ‘cake walk’” etc. etc. etc. Did anyone notice that the actual exit strategies presented by both parties were similar, if not fast identical. The irony of the “surge” of troops is that it was always designed to be accompanied by a drawn-down. Obama and McCain want to redeploy soldiers in Iraq to Afghanistan, our “good war,” and maintain the same military presence in the region. I feel sorry for all my peacenik neighbors here in Park Slope granola land—they actually think Obama would bring the boys home.
