I never thought I’d be rooting on Rick Perry. Yes, partisanship has much to do with the governor’s newfound devotion to the 10th Amendment; he didn’t protest much when George W. Bush (whom Perry succeeded in Austin) was expanding Medicare and federal wiretapping. At the same time, Perry is a don’t-rock-the-boat kinda guy: much like Dubya, he possesses some good instincts but is ideologically fuzzy and malleable. Put another way, he’s exactly the kind of convert that proves that a cause isn’t just the pet project of some enthusiasts on the fringe but a real movement with vitality and staying power. We shall see…
