It’s not easy having pride in Britain these days. The Empire is gone, record numbers of people are emigrating, the working class is uncommonly loutish, and Britain leads the world in few categories, except perhaps in producing the most annoying individual immigrants to America.
But the cousins have found something to take pride in. Parliament has just rejected a bill banning the creation of animal-human hybrid embryos, moving closer to allowing research banned in such fundamentalist backwaters as Germany, France, Italy, and Australia. According to Reuters, this will allow Britain to remain a “world leader in stem cell research.” Things have certainly changed since Britain went to war against Hitler because of the fear of what Nazism would do by “the lights of perverted science.”
