The HL Mencken Club, the unruly band of Alt Right journalists and scholars, will be back in Baltimore this fall, holding its second annual conference, appropriately on Halloween (Oct. 30-Nov. 1). This year?s theme: ?The West?Is It Dead Yet?? (And there seems to a secondary thread running throughout the lectures, a comparison between the 1930s and today, which is, of course, natural as it was in that decade of economic turmoil that the Club?s patron saint took on the ultimate President of Hope and Change.)
Returning will be Peter Brimelow, Lee Congdon, Paul Gottfried, E. Christian Kopff, James Kurth, Tom Piatak, and myself. And the great John Derbyshire will also have his Second Coming at the Mencken Club, speaking on how ?We?re Doomed!?
Newcomers include Patrick Deneen and Gene Edward Veith, who?ll speak on Catholic and Protestant ?radical traditionalism,? respectively, and Kevin Gutzman, who?ll talk about how Washington bailed on the Constitution. Our two guests of honor will be Thomas E. Woods Jr. and Patrick J. Buchanan, both of whom need no introduction.
The official schedule, YouTube highlights from last year, and more information is available at our website. There you?ll also be able to secure a hotel room in Baltimore and register for the conference using PayPal, which allows you to pay with a credit card securely and swiftly.
And as anyone can tell you from last year, perhaps the best part of the conference is getting to meet the various Takimag writers and readers who attend.
I hope to see you there!
